Hermann Kopp - Pop

Not sure I understand the title of this record. Hermann Kopp's name might be familiar to you for one of two reasons: He was a member of German synth-pop trio Keine Anung, whose self-released 1980 LP was recently reissued by Dark Entries... or else you might know him as the sicko who recorded the soundtrack for gross-out horror movie Nekromantik. Less known is Kopp's solo music, some of which is dungeons-and-dragons kitschy goth ambience and some is... whatever this is. Out of step with the German synth-wave and post-punk happening around him at the time and certainly not as "pop" as his previous band was, Kopp self-released "Pop" as an LP on his Passiv label in 1983. It's hard to say what exactly he was going for, which for me is part of its charm. Imagine Tunes of Two Cities-era Residents crossed with Brighter Death Now, maybe?

Chris Cooper - Special Bonus Thing

Mister Pfeffer Nase sheds his Angst Hase for this 2003 3"CDr of prepared guitar that would make Keith Rowe spin in his grave, if only he was dead. Never hurts to plan ahead.

Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase - Glistening Inn

I hear you, telephone thing. The cover says it all on Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase's 2008 LP for Belgian home-for-art-weirdos Ultra Eczema. Trigger warning: Discogs says there's a bassoon on here.

Caroliner Rainbow Gumkuppers & Commode Minstrels In Bullface - Split

Commode Minstrels In Bullface are probably Caroliner on here given that apart from Trey Spruance (yeah, Faxed Head, Mr Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, Asva etc) they were all their own special Rainbow. I'm assuming that this was intended to rotate at 33rpm given that I have a rip at 45 and that doesn't really work.

33rpm 7" released on P-Tapes in 1994.

Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase - Beatings With Gimpy Flighted Wings Entrapped By Post-Fence Of Garish-Land

A big bizarro leap forward for Angst Hase's 1999 LP on Menlo Park. What it might sound like if you played all your Small Cruel Party records at the same time on a toy turntable while washing your dishes with a teddy bear and an immersion blender.

Caroliner Rainbow Gems You Poop Out - Ardelli Horse Haven

"DECLARATION: This seven inch is not in its entirety a Caroliner record as much as a paid documentation of a Caroliner associate Musclenuts soloing on a paid recording financed by a Japanese guitarist who was killed shortly after the recording leaving the band with the bill for the pressing. To sell this turkey an elaborate cover was put together to enhance the triviality of the vinyl enclosed. Musclenuts was aced out of the 10th lp live recording solos because of space problems. This is a listenable recording regardless of its questionable guitar modern-heavy overtones. May Rogette plays bass from the band 'Missouri Diary' which is another 1800's devotion musical ensemble."

Enjoy the obfuscation whilst your gemming your poop out.

7" released on La Brea in 1997.

Caroliner / Culturcide - Split

Just the plain old Caroliner this time. They compensate by recording their first track over the phone. The reverse is the excellent Culturcide recorded Live in Antwerp.

7" released on Birdman Records in 1998 (according to discogs). The caveat is that the archived Caroliner site says "date unknown" and the Birdman catologue numbers jump all over the show (apparently). My money is on 1995 as the actual date.

Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase - Myth Of The Golden Jackal And The Frog

Whatever the myth is, you certainly won't learn about it by listening to AHPN's 2nd 7", released by  Birdman (a relatively high-profile label that also produced albums by Boredoms, OOIOO, Billy Childish, Brother JT etc) in 1996.

Caroliner Rainbow Snake Tailed Waxwalker / Woodpatty The Chicken Climber - Split

Oh Caroliner! The multi-headed Apothecary's shop of hallucinogenic insanity led by chief windowpane Grux. The band that literally nobody has requested that we post. They have no consistent approach and are so far out there on their own that definitions just lose their relevance. We love them, you might not. Shit happens, we'll recover.

One of the things with Caroliner etc is the lack of a coherent history. The releases tend to be in handmade packaging in small numbers that are then released in subsequent editions ... they often turn out to be significantly (if not completely) different versions. We're going to try (and valiantly fail) to clear the waters ... I've always assumed that Woodpatty The Chicken Climber is a Grux / Caroliner offshoot but I'm not 100% ... there goes the first hurdle then.

As far as I know, this was their final release: "A 28 Minute 7" In 12" Form" that is over an hour long in total and is effectively an LP.

Released on BullShit in 2006 (Discogs says 2007 ... I don't think it is).

Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase ‎– El Sabor Rojo / The Spirt Of Rock

Debut 7" single of Bananafish-flavored bedroom noise by Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase ("angry rabbit pepper nose", taken from a line to a German nursery rhyme), aka Chris Cooper, who would go one to be a member of Caroliner, Deerhoof, The BSC, Commode Minstrels in Bullface, and the extraordinary Fat Worm of Error.

Various - String Of Artifacts

This is one of those compilations that makes you realise that you are not as weird as people told you and finally gives you something to aspire to!

From the majesty of Hans Grusel's Krankenkabinet, Caroliner Rainbow, Pod Blotz, Spider Compass Good Crime Band and a surely imaginary meeting between Smegma and Wild Man Fischer through to the relatively normal Wolf Eyes, At Jennie Richie, Fat Worm Of Error, Nautical Almanac, Stilluppsteypa and Sun City Girls.

Roll up, roll up ... it's all here!

Double CD jointly released on Fish Pies and Resipiscent in 2005.

We bend the knee at the majesty of Campbell Kneale's work and clearly Celebrate Psi Phenomenon is one of the finest labels ever. Full. Stop. I dread to think how many combined years we have spent tracking down the physical releases (all of it time well spent). Even if you are not new to the man or the label, this is a cracking compilation.

From the "well known" Birchville Cat Motel, Witcyst, Seht, Pumice, Armpit, 1/3 Octave Band, Dr. Gretchen's Musical Weightlifting Program and Eso Steel to the more esoteric No Logic Noise Farm, Atari Super Predator, Hataitai Bowling Club, Small Blue Torch, Airport and Cowcatcher. It's all here ...

Triple CDr set released on Last Visible Dog in 2001.

Onna - Untitled

The final (as far as I know) Onna release was a compilation from 2009, put out by the American psych/noise label Holy Mountain. It collects that first 7" from 1983 again, a couple of out-takes from "Katawa", and some live tracks.

various - lowercase-sound 2002

These are only a few reasons why you should make your own mind up: Dale Lloyd, Matt Shoemaker, Yannick Dauby, Reynols, Jeph Jerman, Animist Orchestra, John Hudak, Radu Malfatti, Stephan Mathieu, Kim Cascone, Toshimaru Nakamura, Tetsu Inoue and Francisco LĂłpez. Also, there is a track called Civyiu Kkliu attributed to Ludmilla Faulk. hhhhmmm.

Sorry, did I say a few? There is so much more. Just relax and absorb.

Double CD released on Bremsstrahlung in 2002. The second in the series but it didn't come in a metal box. And yes, it came with an extra copy of both discs so you could share them with friends. The circle continues.

Onna - Katawa

The only studio album by Onna came out on the only label it could have come out on: PSF, which was also home to Fushitsusha, High Rise, Kousokuya, Kan Mikami, Che-Shizu... fitting company for Onna's dark, psychedelic strangeness.
