Mr. Quintron - The First Two Records

So, this is the first two Quintron records ... except it's not.

Apparently, in spite of the cover, "it's actually an incomplete combination of tracks from those albums mixed in with compilation tracks, alternate versions, and other rarities. Neither Quintron nor label owner Peter Larson know the actual tracklist". I have both of the releases purported to be included here ... it's not those (which makes this better in my eyes). To confuse matters more, the Bulb site says that the second (The Amazing Spellcaster) is actually their third release.

Mere details my friends ... genius awaits!

CD released on Bulb Records in 1996.

Quintron - Satan Is Dead

Quintron arrived courtesy of the warped minds of Robert Rolston and Miss Pussycat (who might not be Panacea Theriac who apart from drumming also put on puppet theatre shows at gigs whilst Robert hammered away at people's sanity). Genius bizarro rock mixed with fairground music and Bontempi loungecore.

CD released on Bulb Records in 1998.

The Many Moods Of Marlon Magas - Melt Your Gold (Into The Shape Of A Girl)

A big bunch of great people making seven minutes of noise rock meets marching band chaos.

7" released on Scratch Records in 1997.

Terrifying Sickos - Chipping Talc Off Priscilla's Calm Demeanor...

Pete Larson can speak for himself on this one:

"What is important is that this album, recorded in 1986 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is one of the most important records of the 20th century. Before there was BULB, Hanson, Blackjack, Spockmorgue or anything else there was a tiny cassette label called Primordial Sid's which put out some of the most necessary music in the world. The Terrifying Sickos was the big standout. I had a cassette copy which I had stolen from my friend Jeff and I listened to it over and over again. The brain damaged sounds of Joel Black singing "The Bread Assed Man" through an oscillating fan was enough to set the course for the rest of my life. This record is timeless, a product of an unrecognized genius that slays present day noise and "weirdo" music in it's sheer honesty and sincerity. In a time when the underground is filled with bozos trying to imitate one another and "the CDR of the week" syndrome, the Terrifying Sickos stand alone, having only put out this one record in his entire existence. Recorded almost entirely alone in the confines of his room, he was armed with little more than an oscillating fan, a Casio, the outside window and a radio shack tape deck. What lacks in resources is made up for in the depth of the tunes, which are just weird beyond belief. From "No Bozos" to "Pemmican" to "the Bread Assed Man", the Terrifying Sickos are truly an amazing, bizarre and wonderfully honest legacy. When I started BULB, I swore that one day I would put this out and finally the opportunity has presented itself. Primordial Sid's and the Terrifying Sickos were what was responsible for BULB Records. I am very glad to be able to finally share this with the world."

Originally a 1986 tape release, this is the LP reissue from Bulb Records in 2003.

Forcefield - Lord Of The Rings Modulator

The identities behind Forcefield are deliberately obscured and generally attributed to Meerk Puffy (aka Matt Brinkman and one half of Mindflayer) and Patootie Lobe (pardon?). On the earlier releases they are almost certainly a four piece. Whoever is actually here use a 'Frodo' Bode model 6402 dual ring-modulator to create alien radio interference, manic gameboys on bouncy castles or a cross between molten lava and quicksand. The juxtapositions only makes sense to me when I'm listening to it, other than that I wonder what the fuck I'm on about. A sentiment you would be familiar with if you've been here for a while ... anyhow ...

Originally released as a CDr on their own Thunderecorcdrs in 2002, this is the CD version re-released on Bulb Records in 2003.

Ann Sidén - Mankind's Need of Comfort Is Without End

I don't want to spoil this one for you, so I won't describe it too much other than to tell you that I smile every time I listen to it. "Mankind's Need of Comfort..." is, according to Discogs, the composer's only published work. It came out as a CD on Leif Elggren's Firework Edition Records in 2004, and is perfect. Like Elggren's own work, this conceptual recording can be heard as hilariously single-minded and deceptively literal. And yet...

va - Melt

This compilation has a strange history. It was first released in 1992 as a CD on the Work in Progress label. The demand was probably sated by its initial run, but in 1996 an American label called Fused Coil decided to reissue it. Confusingly, they changed the title to "Dissolve" and they gave it new cover art. Like I said, strange. The music more than makes up for the publication weirdness: killer tracks by The Gerogerigegege, Husk, Whiteslug, dROME, Another Headache, Fat Hacker, Zoviet France, Master/Slave Relationship, Hydra (aka Stefan Jaworzyn), Lee Renaldo, Earth Mother Fucker, Antonym and Merzbow. That's one hell of a lineup.

va - Tellus, The Audio Cassette Magazine #22: False Phonemes

As the title makes clear, this 1988 cassette is the 22nd issue of the Tellus audio "magazine", which started in 1983 and released compilations usually based around some theme. The theme for this tape was speech, and so you get manipulated talking by unknown newcomers like John Cage, but also heavy hitters such as Ron Kuivila, Larry Wendt, Remko Scha, Alice Shields, Paul Di Marinas, and others. Sadly, it also includes bullshit by that hack Paul Lansky, whose work (and his "idle chatter" in particular) is the epitome of insipid academic self-congraulatory bullshit. Skip over his track. The rest are fine.
