va - Tellus, The Audio Cassette Magazine #22: False Phonemes

As the title makes clear, this 1988 cassette is the 22nd issue of the Tellus audio "magazine", which started in 1983 and released compilations usually based around some theme. The theme for this tape was speech, and so you get manipulated talking by unknown newcomers like John Cage, but also heavy hitters such as Ron Kuivila, Larry Wendt, Remko Scha, Alice Shields, Paul Di Marinas, and others. Sadly, it also includes bullshit by that hack Paul Lansky, whose work (and his "idle chatter" in particular) is the epitome of insipid academic self-congraulatory bullshit. Skip over his track. The rest are fine.

Ray Off - Nothing Like A Ribbon Round A Parcel

This is flooded with strings with a different pace to the other two and the addition of the melodica is lovely. The laudanum soaked vocals of "And You Take" are spellbinding indeed ... a great release.

CDr released on Black Petal in 2006.

Ray Off - Clean & Dry Area Before Application

This is the same line-up as the previous post except that it also has the excellent Rory Storm on gamelan.

Whilst you're here ... you probably already know that we are devotees of the delights of the New Zealand underground. Whilst this almost exclusively Dunedin based band aren't included, you need to go to the brilliant Dunedin Sound Tapes. All links are active but there have been no posts for a month. Let's hope it's a hiatus rather than the end!

CDr released on United Fairy Moons in 2006.

Ray Off - I Am Not In The Racing Sky

Somebody reviewed these three live recordings thus: "Latest release from this New Zealand freak orchestra led by UFM label boss James Currin and here featuring Katrina Thomson on harp, Pamela Poppins on guitar, organ and voice and Jon Chapman (an original member of Double Leopards) on electronics. Brief parts of this have an ecstatic vocal element that sounds a bit like The Skaters or Ben Reynolds, especially [when] combined with the occasionally ferocious hair-trigger application of microphone feedback and electronics. Use of keyboards is nicely loaded, bringing to mind peak-era Popol Vuh/Tangerine Dream. But it's all framed within these weird avant/chamber folk/drone brackets that are as knotty and warped as your favourite Harvest side. It gets to the point that the rapid succession of electronics/strings/vox/guitar primitivism starts to make much of this recording resemble some kind of episodic travelogue or sound journal, much like the last UFM Ray Off disc, Ghost Wolf Of Thunder Mountain. As soon as you settle back and learn to just dig the scenery it all makes a lot more sense."

Yeah, pretty much, and you can pick up the Ghost Wolf recording here alongside the equally excellent My Favourite Plum 2:18 from 2009.

va - Revue OU

From 1964 to 1974, Henri Chopin published the "Revue OU" magazine about sound poetry. Each magazine came with a record, which makes sense since sound poetry is best understood as a performed artform to be heard rather than simply read. In 2002, Alga Marghen released two different versions of this collection: a 4xCD version and a 6xLP version. The CDs came with a book that reproduces pages from the magazines, which the vinyl came with an LP of music not included on the CDs. This is the CD version. Includes Henri Chopin, Gil J. Wolman, Francois Dufresne, Sten Hanson, Bob Cobbing, Ake Hodell, William S. Burroughs, Bernard Heidesieck, Arthur Rimbaud, Raoul Hausmann, Brion Gyson and many more.

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - The Natural Finger

Back in the day, one of my favourite ways to spend a Saturday morning was to check out the 7" imports box that sat on the counter of Yanks or Piccadilly Records. Buying things that you knew nothing about judging only by sleeve design and band names. This was one of those. I remember taking it home, playing it and thinking "ah well, nothing much going on here" (which was more about what else was in my bag that day). How wrong can a Badger be? This is glorious ... think of the opening of Blue Velvet where the cutesy family are out front and Pop is mowing the lawn and the camera closes in on the severed ear by the white picket fence. Yep, there's a whole heap of weird going on under the surface.

7" released on Ajax Records in 1990.

François Dufrêne - Oeuvre Désintégrale

Big collection of delirious sound poetry by François Dufrêne recorded from 1958 through 1970 and originally issued as a three-cassette boxset by Belgian sound poetry publisher Guy Schraenen Editieur in 1976. In 2007, Alga Marghen reissued it as a 4xLP boxset. There is also a 3xCD boxset version from 2010, which might have slightly different content, but I'm not sure.
