Keiji Haino & Derek Bailey - Drawing Close, Attuning - The Respective Signs of Order and Chaos

The Japanese label Tokuma released four massive Fushitsusha albums in the late 1990s, then doubled down with four more Keiji Haino albums: two solo albums, one album by Haino's cover band Aihiyo and one guitar duo album with the legendary Derek Bailey. This is the Haino/Bailey team-up. You know you need it.

Zoviet France - Assault and Mirage

First issued as a cassette in 1987, then cleaned up for a CD in 1995. Another gem from the Zoviet France catalog.

Zoviet France - Just An Illusion

First released in 1990, "Just an Illusion" remains one of Zoviet France's very greatest achievements. Mysterious, enveloping atmosphere that mixes acoustic instruments with tape delay for a mix of musique concrete, raga, and ambient noise. The edition we have here came inside a balsa-wood box with the titles stained onto it. The liner notes are on another thin sheet of balsa. Sure, it kind of scratches up the CD, but the band that once packed their LPs in roofing shingles could hardly care about that. When someone isn't sure where to begin with Zoviet France, "Just an Illusion" is what I always recommend.

Zoviet France - Garista

The first album by Zoviet France might be a shock to listeners who jumped on later to hear their classics "Look Into Me", "Just an Illusion" or "What Is Not True". Back in 1982, when they self-released "Garista" as a cassette, it might have seemed to have more in common with weirdos like Metgumnerbone, New Blockders or even The Residents' "Eskimo". Feral animal grunting and whooping, banging sticks together at the back of a dank cave, general chaotic weirdness that gives hardly a hint of the atmospheric ambience to come. It's their strangest album, but worth a listen to hear what they were doing as odd teenagers huddled around a tape recorder. It was reissued in all formats in 1990, then on LP by Vinyl on Demand in 2019.

The Box - Muscle Mix

This here is The Box's greatest single recording! It's Richard H. Kirk's insanely dubbed-out mistreatment of  The Box's "Crow Bar" and "Low Commotion" songs from 1984. Required listening for anyone who loves this sort of thing. Fans of early 80s Northern industrial dub punk disco (which should be all of you, frankly) look no further. At the same time that Cabaret Voltaire experienced some mainstream success with the robot-funk albums "The Crackdown" and "Micro-Phonies" albums, Kirk was in top form as a producer for like-minded astronauts like Test Dept, Eric Random, Sedition, Surface Mutants, UV Pop and these guys. He slathered both songs in echo and heaviness and unleashed them as a promo-only 12" on his own Doublevision label. So good.

The Box

The Box are, along with Electric Guitars and Fire Engines, one of the hardest bands to find information about via Google. When the first lineup of Clock DVA split from Adi Newton, they took on singer Peter Hope and made a whole bunch of terrific records. Imagine an industrial dub blues by some Sheffield noise weirdos who must have been listening to lots of Captain Beefheart and Hula. This is their first self-titled EP from 1983.

Bohman Brothers & Richard Thomas - The New York Special

Tour-only CDR (not on Discogs!) by the trio that would later be called Secluded Bronte. Adam Bohman, as you all know, was a member of criminally under-rated group Morphogenesis. Adam and his brother Jonathan perform and record as (duh) the Bohman Brothers. This CDR was sold at North American performances in the 00's. I don't have a cover scan, but it's just generic black text on white paper with no other art or information.
