va - Verschwende Deine Jugend (Punk Und New Wave In Deutschland 1977-83)

A double-disc compilation of German post punk and electronic music during those fertile years, 1977 to 1983. Some of the expected "hits" are present, as they must be: Abwarts "Computerstaat", Die Krupps "Wahre Arbeit, Wahrer Lohn", Andreas Dorau "Fred Vom Jupiter", Malaria! "Your Turn to Run" are all terrific songs that anyone dipping in to this scene for the first time really ought to hear. But of the Fehlfarben songs, thankfully none are "Ein Jahr" (whew!) and the Liaisons Dangerouses song is not "Los Ninos en el Parque". Instead of those obvious choices, the compilers include music by Palais Schaumburg, Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle, Male, Einstuerzende Neubauten, ZK, Der KFC, Die Raidierer, Ostro 430, SYPH, Neonbabies, Hans-a-Plast, Mania D., Freider Butzman, Mittagspause, Die Wirtschaftwunder, Tommi Stumpff, Pyrolator, Ede und der Zimmermanner, Die Toten Hosen, Der Plan, and Xao Seffcheque. It leans a bit heavily on the Zick Zack label and doesn't delve into the cassette-only underground (for that, you'll need to spend some time exploring down this rabbit hole), but I think it's absolutely fine for the snapshot that this is trying to present.
