Giancarlo Toniutti & Siegmar Fricke - *Ko/USK-

A collaborative album by Italian composer Giancarlo Toniutti and Siegmar Fricke (of Delta-Sleep-Inducing Peptide) that came out in 1997 inside a 78-page hardbound book containing graphical scores and Toniutti's impenetrable pseudo-academic/linguistic writing. The sound comes from rubbing stones together, but don't let that banal description fool you. This music reminds me of the cyclic organic rumble of Yeast Culture or Small Cruel Party, or even the first New Blockaders album. Hard to imagine that this was made by human hands.

v/a - The Portable Altamont

The first five 7" singles (1989/1990) from Stefan Jaworzyn's Shock label, issued on one ill-fated compact disc with a bonus track by each artist and terrific cover drawings by Savage Pencil. I say "ill fated" because most copies of the disc were affected by "disc rot" which ate at the material and rendered them unplayable. Music by Current 93, Skullflower, Nurse With Wound, Drunks With Guns, and Coil.

The Cherry Point - Drained Blood

The Cherry Point means business! You can tell by the number of business-card CDRs he released in 2004, like this one that came out in an edition of just 16 copies.

The Cherry Point - Grim Company

A wonderful shitstorm of harsh static by Los Angeles noise monster (and world-reknowned expert on classic horror movies, many of which he curates at midnight screenings and film festivals in Hollywood) Phil Blankenship. As Lefthandeddecision and The Cherry Point, Blankenship produced some of the most fiery and excoriating noise of the 90's/00's. He was (is?) also 1/2 of LHD along with frequent collaborator John Wiese and he ran the prolific and influential Troniks and PacRec labels. This little 3"CDR is one of his best. It came out on Damion Romero's P-Tapes label in a relatively massive run of 100 copies. If you haven't heard TCP yet, this is a great place to start.

Id M Theft Able - E Custodial New Star Gaze

Self-released 2005 CDR by Id M Theft Able, aka I Dick M the F Table aka sound poet/noise/collage artist Scott Spear from the northern wilds of Maine (USA). Imagine the vocal gymnastics of Phil Minton or Dylan Nyoukis smashed together with the absurd full-throttle joy of Crank Sturgeon and the hermetic mystery of Witcyst and you've come close to what this strange Mainer is up to.

Ättestupa - Att Korsa Den Flod Som Kommer Dränka Oss Alla

C38 released on Abisko in 2009. There were 165 handnumbered copies but it was rightfully given a second edition. I'm not sure how many that came in.

Ättestupa is Dan Johansson, Jesper Canell and Viktor Ottosson and these releases demand repeated listening. There is no easy way to describe their work. Every time I listen to them I get more and more. Shamanic neo-folk, crumbling wall noise heard from a distance, martial drums, murky dark ambient drones? You should spend some time with them and make your own mind up.

Between 2008 and 2010 Ättestupa releases were fairly regular and then nothing for ages. I thought that there was nothing more to come.

That is until they released the Musik För Tomma Rum LP on Viktor's Järtecknet label last year. It's a great album and adds more twists ... there are parts that are so slow-motion Swans that I am constantly expecting Michael Gira to sing his heart out! You should check it out!
