Derek Bailey - Duo & Trio Improvisation

1978 LP of the man whose name is synonymous with free improv guitar, Derek Bailey, recorded in a Tokyo studio with local heavyweights including monumental bassist Motoharu Yoshizawa, trumpet player Toshinori Kondo (a collaborator with Steve Beresford, Peter Brotzmann, Peter Kowald, and many more), percussionist Toshi Tsuchitori, tenor sax player Mototeru Tagaki, and sax player Kaoru Abe. This version is the 1992 CD reissue on DIW.

Outtakes from these sessions were eventually released as a CD called "The Music.... Hardcore Jazz", which is yet unheard by me. Less than a month later, a quartet of Abe, Bailey, Yoshizawa and Kondo would take the stage at Machida-Kavalika and record a blistering set that found daylight as the "Aida's Call" CD. I might post that one later if anyone's interested.

Carlton Melton - Live At Hebden Bridge

Recorded live at the excellent Trades Club in the centre of North West England's bohemian spirit that is Hebden Bridge on the 20th of October, 2012.

Being live, there is no point splitting the tracks ... it ends with a cover of Hawkwind's "Time We Left This World Today" with Chris Hardman (of Manchester's rather excellent Dead Sea Apes) adding his guitar work.

Bardo Pond / Carlton Melton ‎– Split

On this one, Bardo Pond deliver the most dense sound that I can remember them achieving. I mean "dense" in the sense of this is what it sounds like when a star collapses ... very heavy indeed! As if to prove that's not enough, towards the end, Isobel floats in her gorgeous vocals and a flute assault. Wonderful! Fellow American space psychonauts Carlton Melton deliver a slow-burning gem that eventually seeks the same singularity.

Boche - Tape

In case you couldn't figure out what this is by looking at it, the title provides a helpful clue: it's a tape. The gent whose noises are preserved on this tape is Hans Ludwig Jacoby, aka Boche, who recorded a small number of industrial bleeps between 1983 and 1991, then sensibly turned his attention to the far more lucrative pastime of racing motorcycles instead. Two albums compiling tracks from Boche's tapes are available at his Bandcamp page (and also as a CD and an LP for all you fans of physical media). I encourage anyone who likes DIY electronic sound (that is, anyone who visits this blog) to buy those now. "Tape" was a cassette released by Marc Behrens' Animal Art label in 1991.

Cassette of Japanese noise, compiled by Yutaka Tanaka (aka S*Core) and released by Sound of Pig in 1989. All-around excellent tape with a variety of approaches, including some obscure artists and some heroes of the genre. Solmania's mutant-guitar shred, Merzbow's throw-everything-in-the-air-at-once assault, a typical (and typically brilliant) tape-mangled violin from Agencement, The Hanatarash grumbling frantically from inside a dumpster, moody gloom from Contagious Orgasm, a short strange glorp by S*Core, Nihilist Surfin' Group (aka Juntaro Yamanouchi of the Gerogerigegege with his pants on), plus oddities by minimal-output forgotten four-track weirdos Noizrt, Liminal Stimulus, Thug System, and PCCBHS.

Campbell Kneale is a really nice bloke. I've met him, he's lovely! He's also the person behind Birchville Cat Motel (amongst others) as well as the immortal Celebrate Psi Phenomenon label. I literally spent so many years stalking the cpsip releases ... all of them are excellent with most topped off with lovely fancy wallpaper sleeves. If you don't want to stalk physical releases then he has made a ton of delights available digitally.

The person on the stone was a bassist in one of those inexplicably popular metal bands. He died flying through a tour bus window ages ago and ended up in one of those phony american hall of fame type things in 2009. The fact that this is a tour tape that was released in 2009 would have the band hunted down with shotguns by rednecks in many places of the world if they had the wit to figure the link or stop inbreeding. I find it very amusing.
