Various - Cruel Claw & Hungry Throat

Apart from Nostalgie Eternelle (who contribute a fairly generic track) if you have heard of anybody on this tape then chances are you are one of them. Totally great sub-sub-underground visions of glory that never came ... an interesting footnote is Incubus (rubbish name) who would change their name to Lewd (which I approve of in general and are also really good) and include Jacques Van Bussel and Peter Duimelinks who frankly are fairly great people in terms of the music they have gone on to create. I say fairly as I don't know how much on a scale of 1-100 they rate cats. They may be genuinely great but without that key piece of knowledge ...

C60 released on Biotope Art Organization in 1991.

Joe Colley - 8 Phased Loops

To chase the beautiful dream of providing a safe space for books and magazines in this age of digital obselecense is truly admirable. To make that a success only for it to fall because of Covid is all the more heartbreaking. We are trying to find out how people can send smaller amounts because everything is going to help ... we'll obviously let you know.

In the meantime, if the availability of printed media isn't important to you (then what is up with you?), here is a reminder of why you should care and give something back: a gorgeous flac rip of a double 7" set released on Stichting Mixer in 2003.

Crawl Unit - Everyone Gets What They Deserve

I wish the title were true. Sadly, Joe Colley (aka Crawl Unit) got something he did not deserve. Joe and his partner Noella ran a newspaper, magazine and book shop in Oakland, California called Issues since 2007. The shop was doing well enough to move to a larger space and became an integral part of the Oakland community. And then the corona virus happened. With the loss of income, Issues had to close its doors. This is from the shop's website:

At the beginning of 2020 we were settled into our new location and on sound footing for the future. Then COVID-19 hit. Sales started to slow down and we were mandated to close as of March 17th. We didn't want to leave our employees in a bad situation, so we sold gift certificates online to pay them for four weeks. Then the Shelter In Place was extended and we were forced to send back any returnable magazines that we could to partially cover vendor bills. We then resorted to selling what merchandise we had left online, and once again, our community was there for us, ordering product and taking a shot at new publications in order to support us. We were able to survive day-by-day because of the generosity of others.
Now, we find ourselves in a heartbreaking position. After being closed for two months and losing all of the revenue that would have mostly been used to restock the store, we are out of funds. We do not have the capital to reorder magazines and start anew. We have spent the past two months applying for every loan and grant that we could possibly find, and so far, we have received zero funding from any sources. Our small business has been left behind.
We are absolutely devastated to announce to you that ISSUES will not be reopening. We simply cannot weather this storm. After thirteen years in Oakland, our time here has come to an end. We are filled with grief that we could not make this work and continue to serve you, our community, that we love so dearly. We are beyond sad.

You can still buy "gift cards", which of course are no longer able to be redeemed, but your purchase would be considered a donation to Joe and Noella, which they undoubtedly need right now. And just in case you need to be reminded of what's so great about Joe Colley, I'll be posting some of his rare albums here for a few days, all with a link to donate money to help him out during this awful time. "Everyone Gets What They Deserve" came out as a CD in 1999 on the CIP label.

Various - Cruel Claw & Hungry Throat 2

First up ... just to warn you ... the track by Roman Ha (yeah quite) is shite. Complete shite ... one of those "nobody knows" who must be a "friend" of the person releasing the tape. Now that I have cast my worthy aspersions we can move on. This is a really great tape: Aktive Stagnation; Ruins; Ixa-Wud; Cosmonauts Hail Satan (which is such a great name but is also Mr Filthy Turd) and Liz Gizzad. Yeah, who the fuck are they ... well one of the noisy fuckers is an early entrance by the gorgeous lanky streak of piss Mick Flower (trust me it's a term of endearment over here ... it's the kind of thing that a lack of prospects engenders) who you may have heard was in Vibracathedral Orchestra. Not so much here, but he turns guitars into fluids ... as captivating a guitarist as I've seen live and that covers a lot of ground ... a kind of inverse / anti-matter Sir Richard Bishop.

C60 released on Biotope Art Organization in 1991. Probably.

Naplam Death - Scum

Yeah, of course I was going to post this next. The Saintly John Peel (for we are not worthy) saved me from the stupidity of the people around me and allowed me a glimpse of light ... but then one night I'm lay on my bed and he says I'm here at some venue in Ipswich to see this unsigned band (sorry can't do the accent and I'm paraphrasing). That band were Extreme Noise Terror and he broadcast the entire gig live to the nation. My drug addled memory is that ENT preceded this but not in terms of official releases. I had traveled a journey through metal (even NWOBHM ffs looking for something meaningful, didn't find it ... lots of nice hairdos though) into punk into anarcho-punk into Birthday Party / Swans / Live Skull / Sonic Youth / Butthole Surfers. I obviously thought that I was far too educated for this shit. However, if you have been around here for a while then you will already be fully aware that I know loads of things about nothing (or is it the other way around?). Some tosser probably made a fortune calling this grindcore ... it's not. It's evolution in action.

Over here, this was originally a vinyl only release in 1987. It was another seven years before Earache reissued it on CD in Blighty. This is the latter edition.

Tribal tomb raiding a-go-go from the likes of Brume, Maeror Tri, Delta-Sleep-Inducing Peptide and Tam Quam Tabula Rasa.

Worthy of special mention are the contributions of the thankfully unknown Centrale Combo whose space synthy fake new age arse is so spectacularly incongruous that it could snap the neck of a fully grown human with a very thick neck. Just warning you. The rest of it is very good.

Aktive Stagnation, Crash Worship ADRV, Tomografia Assiale Computerizzata, Stefano Biasin, Nux Vomica and a whole host of admirable outsider what?

Thirty years ago, I was mourning the living death of the Butthole Surfers so missed this at the time but it was some far out shit daddy-o and would now nestle into a little old-school alcove if allowed. Let's drag it screaming and kicking into the light of the new viral midnight!

Aktive Stagnation - Im Labyrinth Leerer Worte

This is the only other full Aktive Stagnation release. There are a couple of points where they seem to consider adding EBM rhythms (which is clearly a crime against all right thinking people) before recognising their error and turning all dials to dark. A wise move.

C60ish released on Art Brut in 1990 (but possibly 1991).

Aktive Stagnation - Was Sie Nicht Hören Wird Ihr Leben Verändern

Aktive Stagnation were a short-lived project when Christine lived in Austria in the late 80's / early 90's with "Maria Zerfall" and two people who called themselves Rastlos and Sorath. It's very pleasing industrial dislocation.

LP released on Modus in 1991 in a tiny edition of 60.

Maria Zerfall - Zarah Zerfall

Maria Zerfall destroying and rebuilding the work of Zarah Leander (aka the Swedish actress and chanteuse Sara Stina Hedberg who was apparently renowned in the mid-20th century). I'm not convinced that this was recorded around the time of the release and is much earlier but I'm not sure. Does anyone know where Christine went?

Junko | Michel Henritzi | Fukuoka Rinji - Billion Years Of Sighs

"Side A is another love song between La Grande Dame Junko (one of Japan’s foremost improvising vocalists and a member of long-running free-noise unit Hijokaidan) & Michel Henritzi (french guitarist and member of Dustbreeders and Howlin’ Ghost Proletarians). This is blues for the day, from noise to abstract blues, the volcanic meeting between voice and lapsteel."

"Side B is blues for the night with Michel Henritzi and Fukuoka Rinji (Majutsu no Niwa – Overhang Party), another sad story between guitar & violin recorded after Fukushima's trauma. Ashes, asphyxiated air, cloudy and melancholic."

LP released on An'archives in 2014 in an edition of 150 and long out of print.

Maria Zerfall - Kopfkrieg 1985-1995

Maria Zerfall (more or less "innocence is the decay of all material things") is the work of Christine Weyrether who was spectacularly active between these years but then she disappeared from view and I have no idea why that happened. What she left behind is some really great industrial noise works that are utterly Germanic in tone. I posted this compilation a few years ago but a recent conversation sent me back to it and I hadn't listened to it for quite a while and it is even better than I remembered it to be. If bit-rate matters to you then you may want to upgrade to this flac rip. It's a particularly timely reminder given that the resuscitated Vinyl-on-demand has just released an eight LP & 7" box-set. Climb In!

Double CD released on Membrum Debile Propaganda in 2000.
