Massive Stereo Sellout - By Now

Perhaps one of the strangest, most atypical releases in Flying Nun's otherwise friendly catalog of New Zealand pop and rock bands, "By Now", a vinyl EP from 1988, is also the sole release of electronic duo Massive Stereo Sellout. Not the Dunedin Sound.

John Watermann - Warmth Is The Fifth Room

Many of the late Australian composer John Watermann's recordings are available for free download, but not this one. "Warmth..." is Watermann's first LP, self-released on his Nightshift Records imprint in 1988 and long out of print, it's one of his more industrial-influenced collections.

tac - Next

Maybe you haven't heard of tac, the name used by Tom A. Cox of Tennessee for his music since 1984. If you haven't, then let's change that. Cox self-released cassettes (and then CDRs) in very small editions, adorned with clearly labor-intensive silkscreen art and sculptural materials. His music was forbiddingly alien in nature and opaque in substance. Some of it is a tactile noise rush of mysterious origin, harsh and difficult and uncompromising. Later on, tac reversed gears and created albums of nearly-inaudible scrapes and bodiless whoosh.

This massive retrospective box of six 100-minute cassettes collects material from the first ten years of tac's work. Some of it is previously released (not that very many people heard it the first time round), and much of it is not. Collaborations with like-minded artists Small Cruel Party and factor X take up one cassette. If you're a fan of Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock, G*Park, Hands To, Yeast Culture or John Hudak, these six-hundred minutes of fascinating audio ought to keep you enthralled for a long while.

Released in 1997 by Suitcase with a baroque package as demanding as the sound within: painted tapes, silk-screen mesh box, silk-screened booklet.

tape 1 GAM/SEV
tape 2 SIL/STI
tape 3 MAX/AWK
tape 4 CUT/ABS

SAT Stoicizmo - Jačati Tijelo Sportom

Desolate machine-pounding skree from a Croatian band who recorded just a few things in the mid-1980s, released none of it while they were active, split in 1987, saw just two posthumous albums released into the world in the 1990s and were never heard from again. The small trace this trio left behind, though, is the Platonic ideal of grim Eastern European industrial pummel. If black and white images of factories in shadow get your pulse racing, this is for you. "Jačati Tijelo Sportom" was recorded in 1987, first released on vinyl in 1991, then again on CDr in 2009.

GX Jupitter-Larsen / David Jackman - Dissolving Metal Zeros

"Originated as a performance piece wherein ‘zero’ house numerals were filed, scraped and otherwise ‘dissolved’. Other sounds, derived from circular movements of metal objects, were later added to the mix. Mixing and artwork by David Jackman. Original performance, in David Jackman’s garden shed, was recorded on a 1970’s mono cassette deck. All sounds were later transferred to 8-track for mix-down."

7" released on Banned Production in 1994.

S.T.A.B. Electronics - Instrument For Operating On Mutant Women

Keith Finnan started his S.T.A.B. Electronics project as a testimonial to the work of Marco Corbelli. Even if the vocals remind me of Michael Gillham on Smell & Quim's "Powerfuck", I find it quite relaxing. All things are, of course, utterly relative.

Atrax Morgue - Close To A Corpse

"This release includes the complete audio live recordings to the performance "Autopsia dell'opera d'arte vivente come vivisezione del corpo di dio" on 24 /02 /2001 in Viareggio, Italy. The quality of the live sessions is very good because it was recorded directly into minidisc. Sounds are just instrumental improvised synth, sometimes harsh and slowly morbid, with a very surrealistik and hypnotic atmosphere... The third section was recorded in studio in september 2002 featuring 10 different tracks. Cold, massive and pathologic analog synthesizer agony... "

Triple CDr released on Slaughter Productions in 2003.

va - Verschwende Deine Jugend (Punk Und New Wave In Deutschland 1977-83)

A double-disc compilation of German post punk and electronic music during those fertile years, 1977 to 1983. Some of the expected "hits" are present, as they must be: Abwarts "Computerstaat", Die Krupps "Wahre Arbeit, Wahrer Lohn", Andreas Dorau "Fred Vom Jupiter", Malaria! "Your Turn to Run" are all terrific songs that anyone dipping in to this scene for the first time really ought to hear. But of the Fehlfarben songs, thankfully none are "Ein Jahr" (whew!) and the Liaisons Dangerouses song is not "Los Ninos en el Parque". Instead of those obvious choices, the compilers include music by Palais Schaumburg, Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle, Male, Einstuerzende Neubauten, ZK, Der KFC, Die Raidierer, Ostro 430, SYPH, Neonbabies, Hans-a-Plast, Mania D., Freider Butzman, Mittagspause, Die Wirtschaftwunder, Tommi Stumpff, Pyrolator, Ede und der Zimmermanner, Die Toten Hosen, Der Plan, and Xao Seffcheque. It leans a bit heavily on the Zick Zack label and doesn't delve into the cassette-only underground (for that, you'll need to spend some time exploring down this rabbit hole), but I think it's absolutely fine for the snapshot that this is trying to present.

The Horse He's Sick - 30 Gastric Greats

This 1982 cassette of maddeningly hypnogogic (or hypnagogically maddening?) tape scramble was the debut of Ian Andrews, who in the early 1980s was proprietor of Australian noise-cassette label Lymph Products. Andrew also recorded under the just-as-wonderful noms de bruit Cut With The Kitchen Knife (that one's pretty good) and Kurt Volentine. Muffled morning television and insistent electronic blips that are similar, perhaps, to early Severed Heads or Go Back to Your Precious Wife and Son. Lots of short songs.

Go Back To Your Precious Wife and Son - Shindii Shimae

Single-use pseudonym of ex-Severed Head Paul Deering, self-released as a cassette in 1984. If the irritating tape loop loop loop loop loop of "Gashing the Old Mae West" makes you get up and shimmy, these blurps will initiate similarly "enjoyable" bodily discomfort. Great band name, don't you think?

Jo Jo Ef Steve - A Quiet Night In With Jo Jo Ef Steve

Nocturnal plinks, plonks and distracted shuffling by a New Zealand group (??) whose total output is contained on this CDR released by United Fairy Moons. Innocent little microphones are overloaded by fake-raga thwang, children's toys, guitars that sound like they were played by someone who went to sleep two hours before the recording began, and a slathering of cheapo delay pedal as whipped cream on top of this crap cake. When a voice finally comes in, it's hard to tell if it's intentional "singing" or if someone just turned on a television in the next room. For fans of... hell, I don't even know.
