They saved the best until first? Maybe. Leticia is far too earnest and mainstream for me but the rest is gravy. For good measure, they turn in a version of NoMeansNo's "Dad" that seriously competes with the original and that is saying something indeed!

World's End Girlfriend - Ending Story

On superficial surveillance many years ago, I knew exactly what to expect ... post-REM emo, what's the point? I still do that inverse snobbery bollocks but generally I've learnt not to admit it in public. Oh, erm forget I said that. So yeah, as always, my first instincts were completely correct ... this is genius. Katsuhiko Maeda starting off with classically sculptured electronica building to Massive Attack phatness and reverse engineered aphexpusher. So, for good measure, now you are comfortable he throws in one neck snapping turn after another. Wonderful.

Bwannoy - A Minóy/If, Bwana Collaboration

Don't let the generic title fool you. This cassette is a classic of American bedroom murk by two giants, released in 1990 by a Florida label called Antebellum. It is wonderful. Minóy (RIP) was a prolific home taper whose mostly self-released tapes are being remastered and reissued now and are all worth exploring. If, Bwana is the solo project of Al Margolis, who ran the Sound of Pig tape label in the 80s/90s and who currently runs the more academic (but still vital) Pogus Productions

Fucking hell, it's hot over here ...

So, here's a Polish band that should be sitting on thrones in front of their own golden statues. For all I know, that is what they are doing right now. Wonderfully articulate post-rock post-whatever with an adorable Stereolab / Belle & Sebastian vibe going on. Honestly, it's not heatstroke ... it's wonderful!

tac - Lapse of Silence

The final tac release (not counting a collaboration with Kapotte Muziek and All Fours that was recorded in the early 90s but released later) makes sense considering the path he'd chosen. Nearly silent recordings of events that don't produce sound: shadows moving, grass growing, the sun shining. Packaged in an elaborate sculpture of all-white materials that you had to break to get the CDR out. There wasn't much more he could have done after this, so he (seems to have) stopped.  Self-released edition of 50 from 2003.

Front Line Assembly - Compilation Tracks

In the 1980s, before they became stars of the Wax Trax!/Third Mind industrial rock scene, Canadian electro duo Front Line Assembly contributed lots of tracks to obscure experimental cassette compilations. During this era, they were basically a "Crackdown"-era Cabaret Voltaire tribute band. I've collected most of those tracks for you here. I think the only tracks missing are from the two "Dossiers" compilations and on from a comp called "KR1ME".

You know, I used to think "Haus Arafna ... are they all that?". Then I didn't think about it much for a long time. I've been listening a lot lately and it turns out that the answer is "Yes, what the fuck were doing leaving it this long?". So, having formally apologised to my own thoughts ... you think post-punk / post-industrial Kraftwerk mixed with a sophisticated Sutcliffe Jügend. Then it's all on you and my thoughts bear no responsibility for what happens next. The other stuff on here is great too btw ...

buy proper books you "modern" bastards ...

Digital books? What the fuck is all that about? What you need is something big and physical that's going to break your nose when you're reading in bed and you fall asleep with it raised above your face. Now they are scars worth having! So kids, compare that with trying to burn your Kindle Fire's and collapsing under the irony.

Anyway, this is a "big-up" (as, I am advised, grandads still routinely say) to Richard "Richo" Johnson. All of his musical work is brilliant and worth tracking down but he is the founder of Splintered who we have featured heavily here over the years and frankly are one of the best bands you will ever hear. Apart from the Grim Humour fanzine, he also turned Fourth Dimension Records into what it became: a first stop for the appreciators of some of the finest artists on the planet as well as the finest purveyors of fine lunacy.

He probably does good sculptures but he really does do very very good book. I should know. I bought all three of the ones currently available on pre-order (at some god-forsaken part of the covid wall of shite) and have had them in my sweaty hands for ages. They are really really good. There is Volume 2 of Grim Humour in the pipeline that I will definitely be snapping up on preorder ... but i'm really looking forward to the Mark Perry / Alternative TV book! Anyway, Richo shows you them below so virtually get of your virtual arses and snap them up whilst they are still around.

Before I move on, he says people have complained about the postage. I definitely would not want that idea to put you off! Maybe the entitled arsewipes expected him to carry them to their front doors. Shipping is what it is. I got them from Poland to sunny Manchester, shipped individually when they were released. They arrived perfectly packaged and in perfect condition. I can't even remember what the shipping cost was so it couldn't have been that bad!

Oh, and ...

Whilst I am on the subject of real books, it would remiss of me not to mention the lovely and occasionally grumpy Frans de Waard who has been involved in a big old chunk of the finest music Northern Europe has had to offer over the past thrity or so years and ran Korm Plastics. He also does good book ... I don't know why I haven't bought the first two yet but I already have the other three ...

Wayne Butane - Sedukted!

There are many reasons to be alive but one of the main existential obstacles to overcome is "now what the fuck am I gonna do with all this time I have before I die?"

There are really not that many humans that reach the conclusion "I'll fuck things up for my own entertainment and see how it pans out".

Clearly, Mr Butane is one of those beautifully antisocial bastards that inadvertently guarenteed his place within the one true sub-sub-underground "blessed be their anonymity" pantheon. I love him. He would hate that. Perfect. We've all achieved very little so today has been a very good day!

Taco - タコ Box Vol.1 甘ちゃん

I posted this a few years ago and decided to renew the links ... so pulled the post forward so it's more visible. I'm pretty sure that the first time it was 320, this time it is flac if that's something you are arsed about.

I used to think that Taco never really existed and began to think that they were imagined somewhere in order to torment me with the never to be realised potential that the myth might actually be true.

The increasingly magnificent Super Fuji Discs released this four CD masterpiece in 2012. Apparently there is a Volume 2 as well ... but I can barely manage English never mind navigate their website ... maybe one day I will hear that truth as well ...

And this is pertinent information lifted from elsewhere:

"Taco" means "octopus”, "kite" and even "bunion" in Japanese. Bald men or men with shaven heads, and red-faced, staggering drunks are also referred to as "taco". It’s a word that appears in a lot of slang and sayings. "Taco" is also the name of the 80s music and performance collective whose performances were like nothing before or since.

The Japanese band Taco, formed at the beginning of the 80s, is a loose group/collective of varying members that belongs to the post-punk alternative music movement. The network of members was all friends and acquaintances of Harumi Yamazaki, ex-member of Gaseneta and Taco’s central member. Taco can be described as a band of guerillas who, over the years, continued to connect, collect, interrupt, and scatter while sending out, into the world, music and sounds that can best be described as transient. Taco also performed without Harumi and so it is as though the band is an anonymous group of mercenaries.

Taco’s first album was released in 1983 and had a huge impact on Japan’s underworld music scene as an anomalous and collaborative album involving various participating artists (the stars of Japan’s underground music scene!) and Harumi, who provided the lyrics. Although each track represents a reverberating conglomeration of sounds created by this transient local network, common to all the tracks is Harumi’s expressive lyrics. This has the effect of transforming all the tracks into a single powerful force which in turn spawns an 'incident' which spreads like a giant ripple. However, because of another incident in which the records were recalled due to the scandal caused by some of the lyrics, only a limited number of people actually own a copy of the album.

The following is a description of Taco by one of its members following one of its live performances:

"Taco’s like a project where the indeterminate participants fan each other’s heightened emotions of wanting to wreak personal revenge and retribution. It’s an ecosystem of tangible and intangible mouldy slime which accumulate in order for emotions to be acted out, both indoors in the studio, or outdoors on stage. That’s why the avenger can often end up being the victim."

Yeast Culture - Shit On A Shingle

As is obvious by holding, or even just looking at, any of Yeast Culture's albums, they take a very long time to produce. The sound is remarkable and unique, but the art and packaging seems so labor-intensive, it's no wonder the group has not released very much. But when they do, it's always worth the wait. This triple-cassette set was recorded in 1991 and released in 2013. The tapes come in two cedar shingles, everything screen-printed. The tapes themselves, the tape cases, the art book inside, all of it so complex that it's no wonder there was a decade+ gap between realizing the sound and making it available to the public. Here are sounds n' scans to tide you over until you hunt down a physical copy of your own. The husband and I have our YC art-objects on proud display in our home.

Yeast Culture, All Fours, Achim Wollscheid - Red Light Remixes

"Concrete assembly from live & field recordings made in Atlanta, Georgia at the Red Light Cafe for Suitcase Recordings' Paper and Plastic CD release event on Saturday, May 23, 1998. Field recordings were made around the Red Light Cafe and other Atlanta locations. Edited, produced and mixed July 2010 in Oregon. Both sides of the tape are the same." Released in 2010 as a cassette by Yeast Culture's own Incubator and Petri Supply labels (I'm not sure if those are different labels, or just two names for the same imprint) with YC's usual remarkable silk-screen art.

Yeast Culture - IYS Field Tapes

This elaborately packaged set of six cassette tapes contains the source sounds used for Yeast Culture's classic 1989 LP "IYS". As with all things Yeast Culture, the set was adorned with astoundingly complex silk-screen art that has to be seen and held to be believed. The package was screen-printed, as were each tape, the tape cases, and two books of text and art enclosed inside. The box itself was wrapped in an actual tree branch from (I presume) the Oregon woods where these sounds were foraged. But since only 30 copies of "IYS Field Tapes" were made, maybe you didn't get a copy of your own.
