Various ‎- Improvised Music From Japan Extra 2006

This is a two disc set that came with the Special Berlin Issue which documented the scene in the German capital at the time. Just in case you are wondering where 2007 and 2008 figure in all this, the catalogue numbers for these and the 2009 set are consecutive. If the magazines were released in those years then it looks like they came without musical accompaniment.

Residents Uninc.

I'm assuming that everybody knows about The Residents but here is something for that one person who doesn't!

Recorded on quarter inch reel to reel tape in 1971, this was never released. Apparently the front of the box showed an infant being orally abused by an adult female with the image lifted from some Danish magazine. If I haven't lost you already, this is a really great and bizarre offering recorded before The Residents officially existed. One of the highlights for me is a crazed hyperactive run through of King Kong from The Mothers Of Invention's "Uncle Meat". This is a glimpse into the things that were to come!

Thankfully, The Residents came to save us all! I am incapable of imagining what the world would be like had that not been the case and to be honest, I wouldn't want to!

va - Violent Ambient Vol. 1

An overlooked classic, "Violent Ambient Vol 1" is precisely what you want a mid-90's noise compilation cassette to be. Tracks by Trance, Monde Bruits, Pain Jerk, (In Spite of Flaming Creatures), K2, Merzbow, Seido, Cock ESP, C.C.C.C., Deisel Guitar, Hideg Roncs, Thirdorgan, Evil Moisture, Violent Onsen Geisha and Macronympha. Chocolate Monk unleashed this one in a little pouch made of sandpaper in 1994.

William S. Burroughs - Nothing Here Now But The Recordings

In 1981 Industrial Records released this absolute classic. The driving forces for organising and releasing this in the UK were Genesis P-Orridge and Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson. You can feel their hearts and minds all over this and I have always seen this album as a collaboration with Mr. Burroughs.

Between 1979 and 1981, Industrial Records was (fundamentally) Throbbing Gristle's label and it folded in '81 when TG disbanded. However, it reactivated in 2004 when TG started to record and perform again.

Material - Seven Souls

Although Material were active with Bill Laswell and Michael Beinhorn at the helm since 1978, when the latter left in 1985, Bill continued under the name, recruiting able lieutenants as the need arose. From this point on Material steered into more dub-ambient African/Asian influenced territories. This was released in 1989 and contains the spoken word of the mighty William S. Burroughs!

There are parts of this that sound a little dated some 25 years after the event and the "Equation" track seems completely out of context. However, the word of the great man over some great North African styled rhythms is ultimately magnificent.

These are two C15s and a couple of C10s released on Hate State in 2007.

va - Eepman Sez

"Eepman Sez" is a weird old American noise comp CDR from the late 90's or early 00's, put together by Scott Bosse/Brxtnle on a label called ELP, which I do not know much about. There are some names here you might have heard of - Crank Sturgeon, Skin Crime, Never Presence Forever, Flatline Construct, IMF (aka Id M Theft Able)- and others that I didn't recognize - Chinese Gordon, Antibody, Flutter, Alhazred. The compiler contributed two tracks, one as Brxtnle and one as Lather. In truth, this disc is a mixed bag. Bands like Skin Crime and Crank Sturgeon are reliably kickass as ever, but there's some amateur hour to skip through too. You may opt to find the relatively inept tracks charming. The album came with little cards for each band, which I scanned all together.
