Local Disorder ‎- Magic Spells Of The Gagged

This is a CDr and C60 set that was released on American Tapes in 2001 in an edition of twenty. Local Disorder is the work of John Olson but is the CDr really just him on his own? The CDr is completely driven and practically psychedelic whilst the tape is much more lo-fi and disjointed (and reminds me of the Modules series that I posted in September).

It's AM164 btw.

Various ‎- LOUD : : QUIET

This is a double CD featuring Aerospace Soundwise (aka Todd Carter who is a member of TV Pow), Pita (aka Peter Rehberg who also runs the great Editions Mego label and check the bandcamp), Otomo Yoshihide, TV Pow, Shifts (aka Frans de Waard), Tetuzi Akiyama and Taku Sugimoto, Stilluppsteypa, A-D Relay (aka Robert Wilkus who was formerly in Television Power Electric), Voice Crack, Tetuzi Akiyama with Ikuo Noda and Daisuke Naganuma, Kazumoto Endo, MSBR, Kapotte Muziek, Wheaton Research (aka Brent Gutzeit) with Lasse Marhaug. Finally you have Black Dot who are unknown to me.

You won't be particularly surprised to find out that each artist contributes something loud and on the other disc it's erm quiet (and occasionally silent).

This is a great compilation released on Brent Gutzeit's BOXmedia in 2000.

John Peel

When I was a kid, I never felt that I belonged anywhere. I felt like I had been transplanted into a family of aliens and a world of utter normality. I knew that I didn't think the same way, feel the same way or view the world in the same way as anybody around me. It was an utterly dislocating experience which I couldn't articulate. Then I found John Peel and he saved me! I remember clearly the first time that he spoke to me. After yet another stupefyingly grey day I was lay in bed late one night messing about with the radio dial and stumbled across his show. I understood nothing but I suddenly knew that there was this brand new world out there. I spent years taping his shows and chopping them up into mixtapes so I could take this world with me wherever I went. He introduced me to artists, styles and juxtapositions that absolutely transformed everything. Sessions by the likes of The Fall, The Bhundu Boys, Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle, Big Black, Extreme Noise Terror interspersed with tracks by Public Enemy, Luke Slater's 7th Plane, Ivor Cutler and Sonic Youth were revolutionary events. Life was never the same ...

I nearly met him once. He used to do "John Peel Roadshows" where he would DJ at gigs. I went to what was then Manchester Polytechnic to see King Of The Slums (I can't remember who else was on the bill). There he was behind the decks and I was literally awestruck. I couldn't speak to him because I would have just gushed about how much I loved him. Instead I got my then-girlfriend to ask him to play Big Black's L-Dopa for me. He played it straight away and I danced like a frenzied fool on an otherwise empty dance floor. A memory that brings pleasure and shame in equal measure (you haven't seen me dance, if you had that would make perfect sense).

Ten years ago today (where the hell did all of that time go?), John died. I woke up and turned on the radio to be told that he had gone. I burst into tears and couldn't stop for hours. The tears didn't really stop for weeks. To my eternal regret, I couldn't get down to Norwich for John's funeral where hundreds of people just like me lined the lane and applauded him as he passed on his last journey. I held a silent vigil at home. That evening I played all of the Peel Session LPs that I have and danced like a frenzied fool...

John remains the most important man in my life. He always will be.

Today, my thoughts are with John and his family. They are also with the people like me who were utterly transformed by the great man. Tonight, I will be raising a glass to John, playing Peel Sessions back to back, dancing like a frenzied fool and smiling ...

Big Black: broadcast on the 6th of May, 1987

Lidless Eye‎ - Death Perverser

Does a release of only four copies constitute a "release" or just the start of a rumour? Either way, this is a double C30 set "released" on 8EMINIS in 2013 in an edition of four copies. For me, this sits as a single piece and the sides should be listened to consecutively ... it builds and builds all the way through and you start to miss it when it has gone. It's a great way to spend (at the very least) an hour of your life!

Knox Mitchell (for it is he) also records under many other names (you seriously need to check out his work with Andrew Coltrane as 1%er ... genius stuff!) and runs the excellent Green Records And Tapes. If you don't know GRT, you should just buy whatever is put out quite frankly ... it never misses a step!

Lidless Eye ‎- Basement Grave

C32 from Knox Mitchell's Lidless Eye project. This was self-released in an edition of around 10 copies in 2013 and only went to friends and a few email contacts. It's a splendid thing that manages to be disorientating and captivating at the same time. Side A gives you channel switching, oscillating crunch whilst the flip offers a repetitive tribal rhythm with effects which wouldn't be out of place on This Island Earth before spinning out of control and decaying right in front of you. A great tape.

The Cherry Point - Night Of The Bloody Tapes

CD released on Troniks in 2005.

You may have gathered that we adore Phil Blankenship! His work as Lefthandeddecision and his collaborative work with John Wiese as LHD are equally important. He also gave us one of the most significant labels in our little sub-underground universe. All Hail Troniks!

I have exhausted The Cherry Point's joint releases that I am able to post (or that we haven't posted already). You can still buy the physical or digital collaborations with Yellow Swans, Oscillating Innards and Howard Stelzer. Naturally if you have any of the others and would be prepared to share them then I would be hysterically happy! Until that glorious day arrives, this seems like a natural endpoint:

"Contains material originally from the long deleted split tapes with Ahlzagailzehguh, Black Sand Desert, Luasa Raelon, Nkondi, Andy Ortmann, Pedestrian Deposit, The Rita, and more."

All Hail Phil Blankenship!
