Hair Stylistics - Dynamic Hate

When he called himself Violent Onsen Geisha, Masaya Nakahara produced some of the most scorching albums of the first wave of Japanese noise. But Nakahara, who is well known in Japan as an award-winning novelist, visual artist and occasional actor, has always been harder to pin down than simply as a contemporary of Merzbow and Masonna. In fact, he never considered himself to be part of any scene, and still doesn't.

When he changed his musical name to Hair Stylistics, Nakahara openly embraced the influence of hip-hop and pop music that was hidden beneath his previous electronic din (if you don't believe me, listen again to Shocks! Shocks! Shocks! or the perfectly-titled "Fuck Off RRRecords, Bye Bye Noise Music" off the Come Again 2 compilation). He also ramped up productivity, releasing two 12-albums series' of "Monthly Hair Stylistics" CDs: one album a month for an entire year. If that's not enough, he also self-published huge amount of very small edition CDRs and a few standalone pressed CDs and LPs. Despite the avalanche of product, there has been no sacrifice in quality; improbable as it may be, most of these albums are very good.

Dynamic Hate is one of my favorite Hair Stylistics albums. Released as a CD in 2013 on the pop label Disques Corde, it is essentially an instrumental hip-hop album with short songs comprised of sparse beats and nonsense samples that betray a bizarre sense of humor. Perhaps the line from VOG's "Otis" to "Dynamic Hate" is an easy one to trace.

Hair Stylistics is the noise project of Masaya Nakahara that has taken over from his Violent Onsen Geisha escapades. He is astonishingly prolific but his work is very difficult to source unless you are in Japan or speak the lingo. Every time he offers up wonderful work that displays a sense of humour that is sadly lacking in a typically ultra-serious genre.

The "Monthly Hair Stylistics" series of cdrs were released in a series of 12 (plus a 13th "Mystery Disc") during 2008 (and a little bit of 2009). I only have seven of the thirteen unfortunately. Would I be pissing in the wind in asking somebody out there to help fill in the gaps?

I have around another 50 Hair Stylistics releases that I may sprinkle around at some point.

Hair Stylistics / Yoshio Kuge / Atsuhiro Ito / ??? - Live:Album

Another three cdr set from 2010 this time. Again three hours plus of mayhem!

Yoshio Kuge is the punk/underground drummer who has played with many Japanese underground groups including Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Masami Shinoda Unit and Les Rallizes Denudes amongst many others.

Atsuhiro Ito makes use of fluorescent lighting (which is also an element of his art installations) in the creation of an original musical device called the optron. He is also active in a number of musical outfits, one being Optrum, the explosively loud "extreme optical noise core band" consisting of Ito and drummer Yoichiro Shin.

This is the last one for now, we're getting a bit twitchy and need to move on. We'll return to the theme soon and will be re-uploading all of the dead Stylistics links and will resurrect the Violent Onsen Geisha posts for good measure.

A short while ago, we re-drifted past the Hair Stylistics discogs page to find that the number of releases had doubled. At the last count, we have sixty seven of them and we were missing quite a few. Then "all of a sudden" it turns out that we are missing at least one hundred and sixteen. Sincerely brothers and sisters, we shed a tear! Actually, I cried a lot. The problem is that we have virtually nothing that was released after 2010 ... maybe three releases (and the two on bandcamp) and that's it! If anybody has any of these Holy Grail items that they would be willing to share we would be forever in your debt. It's more than fair enough if they aren't for posting, me and Mrs Inside are Masaya Nakahara fanatics and every new thing would bring us copious amounts of joy!

Generally speaking, I am always approximately 6,000 miles away from him. Legally, it's for the best. If I was any closer I'd probably stalk him just to touch the hem of his garment. True Genius!

I think it's fair to say that Masaya Nakahara (along with John Olson) is our exemplar of meaningful creativity. An apparently ceaseless stream of releases where the themes might change but the quality almost never drops below brilliant ... and even a perceived lowering of the standard is a very personal decision that is wide open to criticism. We know that he regularly records a whole bunch of CDrs and walks into his local record stores and hands them over for sale. This means three things: there are huge holes in his discography because we don't know him; we don't work behind those record counters so never get the chance; we can't afford the prices that the same scalpers offer them up for on discogs.

Slightly confusingly, he has two bandcamp pages going ... this one sort of stopped but then a different one appeared recently that offers up an avalanche of recent savant imaginings.

If I ever find any of those missing pieces of the Hair Stylistics puzzle then I will share at every opportunity until I drop dead.

This is a self-released / Boid CDr from 2017 that isn't on discogs and isn't on bandcamp or apparently anywhere else ... in the world.

Most of the older links are undoubtedly dead. If we were to try to keep every link going there would literally be no time for new posts.

Given that we have an untold number of things that we think need to be heard, it's not possible to do both.

Some things may be re-upped but (as always) we are unlikely to pay any attention to "anonymous" requests.

Entertaining (rather than desperate) requests may stand a chance but don't bet on it!
