There are very very few artists who can get away with that pose... Con-Dom, maybe?... but racism, and especially Nazism, is such a simplistic signifier of "power" within industrial music that it hardly matters. Too often, intentional ambiguity (such as with Genocide Organ, for example) has the effect of giving tacit permission to (mostly white, male) listeners to get off on prurient indulgence of "white power". I'd rather listen to Fela Kuti, who genuinely provoked power and started actual dialogue about politics. What has Brethren ever challenged, other than my patience? Oi gevult.
While it's true that sometimes boneheaded music made by boneheads can be enjoyable for what it is (har har, listen to those rednecks scream! they think that the majority is persecuted! and they own a synthesizer! Haw!!!), Badgerstump and I don't see the need to use Bleak Bliss to promote it. Folks like Grey Wolves seem to try to push buttons for a laugh (not that it's actually funny), but bands like that don't need our support here. Restating the enemy's words and images in the context of noise music is too one-dimensional even to work as provocation. Who's being provoked by a Blackshirt Orchestra tape? Not me. It's just dumb. Smell & Quim, now THERE's a funny noise band!
I completely concur with the Fela Kuti and Smell & Quim points as well.
There is a history of art as transgression and vice versa going back as long as human history. Transgression was certainly a theme within early industrial music (but not always).
Slave State were late '90s. What was their excuse? That ship had sailed. Not that they are the only ones...there are others who strike the same pose. That is obviously a conscious choice that they make. They are free to make that choice because we are relatively free. Check out the consequences of an authoritarian state that naturally arise from the agenda that they set. Seriously, we have all been here before. The bullshit that racists (or the pretend "ooohhh, look at me, I'm being dangerous and outsider") racists only demonstrates a failed education or an inability to be educated.
We will engage politically and personally in our daily lives. We don't use the blog to imprees or imprint others with our deeply held convictions. The real purpose of the blog is on the front page. We will never (knowingly) use this blog as a means to promote racism, homophobia or misogyny. We are not interested in what other people think about this. It reflects who we are and how we live our lives. It is that simple.
However, misanthropes and the occasional sociopath are more than welcome!
