Christian Marclay / Thurston Moore / Lee Ranaldo - Fuck Shit Up

Fantastic live recording of a set at the 16th Festival International Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville on the 24th of May, 1999. Just in case you were wondering ... yes, they do indeed fuck shit up!

Are the Volcanoes Still Active? - Know Your Equal

Restrained throbbing-feedback ambience that's surprisingly pleasant for a band with Richard Ramirez in it. This cassette came out on Truculent in an edition of 100 copies in 2006.

[Quick Badgerstump update: looks like the links for this and the Neuntöter Der Plage tape died prior to posting. Luckily, I grabbed them when they were sitting in the departure lounge ... so I've replaced both.]

Various - Endzeitkonstruktionen

Strangely compelling double C90 set that spends nearly all of it's time in a hallucinogenic dark ambient world. An echo of a bad trip perhaps. Quite a few of the artists here are largely unknown (to me) with appearances apparently limited to German compilations but the likes of Brume, Telepherique, Tomografia Assiale Computerizzata, I: Wound or De Fabriek might just tempt you in ...

Released on Neuzeitliche Tonkonstruktionen in 1993.

Ralph Lundsten / Leo Nilson - Elektronmusikstudion Dokumentation 1

Ralph Lundsten and Leo Nilson combining to produce a really quite spectacular piece of vinyl. This is probably my favourite of the series of four Elektronmusikstudion Dokumentation albums. Saying that, they are all wonderful. Some four or five decades after they were created they fit perfectly amongst everything else we have posted here ...

Sveriges Radio represent one of the finest examples of public service broadcasting. They released this LP in 1966.

K2 - Maximum Lateral Pressure

It would be especially appropriate to say that K2 makes noise with surgical precision, because (aha!) Dr. Kimihide Kusafuka is, in fact, a real life surgeon! Death metal bands like Carcass think they're extreme because they opened a medical textbook and copied the names of diseases to use for song titles... but it's much more extreme for K2 to have opened up the same medical textbooks because HE WAS IN MEDICAL SCHOOL, STUDYING TO BECOME AN ACTUAL DOCTOR. In his spare time (do you know of any surgeons who have spare time?) he bashes on metal and makes noise. This cassette was put out by Realization Recordings in 1994.

AFX Food

Of course, you know that Aphex Twin is Richard D. James.

I only found out on Thursday that he is out there as user48736353001 and has put 155 tracks of older material and unreleased work up on Soundcloud for your listening pleasure and/or free download.

Then the following day, in a completely random manner, I was wandering around and ended up listening to Ninja Tune's Solid Steel Radio Show and fuck me! The legendary DJ Food has only gone and mixed a shitload of the AFX tracks and turned it into a 90 minute broadcast.

Sorry it took me until Sunday to point you towards it but I've been busy windowlicking...

... and is this a new AFX bandcamp?

Blackest Ever Black ‎- An Old Dead Leaf Painted Purple

Right. Enough of all this harsh business. Well, for a few days.

This is a bonus CDr that came with a limited edition T-Shirt from Blackest Ever Black that was sold at the tail end of 2012. The "track-list" gives you a clue where this mix is heading but it's enveloped in the BEB aesthetic (which is obviously a very great thing indeed).

If you liked any of the Krokodilo tapes I posted a while ago then you really need this. Stunning ... and completely recommended!

Various ‎- HNW: Alone

Jim Haras runs the Fusty Cunt label, records as Deterge and must have a perverse sense of humour. For the label's 34th release, he prepared a huge ten C60 collection to deliver a total Harsh Noise Wall overdose. Then he listed the artists alphabetically and randomly ascribed numbers to the otherwise featureless tapes. I would imagine that no two sets are the same. Even the biggest Wall nerd won't be able to figure out this puzzle...

There are three people that I was not previously aware of but then there's Ghoul (aka Robert Meldrum aka Corpse Candle), Griz+zlor, I Am A Slut {aka Tomasz Piotrowicz), Shining Sex (which is another alter ego of Richard Ramirez), Självhat, Svartvit and (obviously) Vomir.

Released on the excellent Fusty Cunt Tapes in 2010.

Various ‎- Cataclastic Fracture

A note of caution if your pulse has increased to dangerous levels: this isn't the tape collection. The original version of this CD was a three times C90 boxset that I have never seen for sale or to beg, borrow or steal. It's one of those missing things that hurt. This version features one to two minute snippets of the material on the original tape set and shows how great that set must be. In the absence of the tapes, this will have to do ... perhaps forever.

Jointly released on Deadline Recordings ‎and Lazy Squid in 1994.

Contagious Orgasm - In My Heart

A picture-disc by Hiroshi Hashimoto/Contagious Orgasm, who gets lumped in with "Japanese noise" but isn't really noise at all. A whole lot of his music is rhythmic, even tribal, with lush soundtrack-like passages. This EP came out as a 10" on Ant-Zen in 1998.

Alva - That's Not Fair

Alva were a trio from Tampa, Florida, who had one cassette in 1997, then one CD on John Zorn's Avant label and an album on Menlo Park before vanishing into who-knows-where. They played accordion, violin, and what sound like toy instruments doing (purposefully?) naive Residents-like ditties about Edward Gorey and flies. This is the cassette, which I believe was their first release.

Panther Skull - Gunk Vol. Two

An early tape of crusty tape loops and feedback drone by Justin Meyers, also known as Devillock and 1/2 of Glass Organ. Meyers' graphic design skill and striking, clean aesthetic made his Tone Filth label stand out from the 00's spray-paint-and-pot-smoke basement noise cassette crowd. This mini-album, published in an edition of just 33 copies in 2005, featured black paint on black paper with a neat complimentary flourish on the white label. But visual splendor would be nothing without sound to back it up. Meyers' own music was (and continues to be!) stellar, as you will soon hear for yourself.

White Blobs - Untitled

A mystery cassette from the excellent Tone Filth label (RIP, but replaced by the equally sterling and hilariously-monikered Sympathy Limited), published in 2006 in a run of less than 50 copies. The artist(s) behind White Blobs is not given credit, though I assume that it's label boss Justin Meyers (aka Panther Skull, Devillock, and 1/2 of Glass Organ) since it sounds like his well-manicured analog synthesizer squeak and burble. This tape features two short tracks (or one track, spread over two sides) of hushed, playful circuit bloop. The music seems perfectly suited to its format in that it's easy to have this tape flip and repeat over and over, letting the listener live in its midst as if conducting life's business whist swimming in a pool full of colorful plastic balls. There is one passage towards the end of side 2 that seems to be a crescendo (sort of), but for the most part you could have this music playing softly over the speakers in a used bookstore and no one would be too bothered by it. If anyone can confirm or deny my hunch that Meyers is indeed twiddling the knobs on these blobs, I would be curious to know.

TAC - Lapse Of Silence

This shorter outing also comes with "destroy before listening" packaging. It also does what it says on the tin, so if you want to know what the sound of grass growing or mushrooms dropping spores is like, this is your cup of tea. A different kind of extreme sound art, barely perceptible.
